Outrage in Ghana as microfinance staff filmed assaulting mother and infant over GH¢300 debt

A video capturing the violent arrest of a nursing mother by employees of a microfinance institution has ignited widespread public condemnation and raised serious questions about debt collection practices in Ghana. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, involves four male staff members of Bills Micro Credit who are seen on footage physically accosting a 36-year-old woman over an alleged default on a GH₵300 loan.

According to reports and the viral video circulating on social media, the debt collectors arrived at the woman’s residence in a branded company vehicle. The confrontation quickly escalated from a demand for payment to a physical altercation. The footage shows the staff members seizing the woman’s mobile phone and forcibly dragging her to the ground, all while she was carrying a baby in her arms.

The graphic nature of the video has sparked a wave of public fury. Critics and civil society observers have condemned the actions as inhumane, unprofessional, and a gross abuse of power by a formal financial entity.

“To use brute force on a mother with an infant over an amount equivalent to a few hundred cedis is not only shameful but criminal,” said a representative from the [Insert Name of a Ghanaian Consumer Rights NGO, e.g., Association of Ghana Industries – if appropriate, or keep generic]. “This incident underscores the predatory and aggressive tactics that some micro-lenders resort to, bypassing legal and ethical recovery processes.”

The incident has reignited a national debate on the regulatory oversight of the rapidly growing microcredit sector in Ghana. While these institutions provide essential financial services to those without access to traditional banking, advocates argue that a lack of enforcement allows some companies to operate with impunity, employing intimidation and violence against vulnerable borrowers.

As of the time of this report, Bills Micro Credit has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, the public outcry is growing, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to demand an immediate investigation and sanctions against the company. Calls are mounting for the Bank of Ghana and other relevant regulatory bodies to launch a formal inquiry into the company’s lending and debt collection practices.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals who rely on microfinance and the urgent need for stricter adherence to ethical standards and legal frameworks governing debt recovery in the country.
