Outrage as video shows patients sleeping on floors at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital

A viral video depicting patients lying on the floor of a ward at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has sparked widespread public outrage, renewing concerns over chronic overcrowding and infrastructure deficits within Ghana’s healthcare system.

The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows several individuals occupying floor space due to an apparent shortage of available beds. The scene has drawn sharp criticism from the public, who describe the conditions as dehumanizing for patients seeking care at the nation’s premier tertiary referral center.

The incident has brought the recurring issue of the “no bed syndrome” back into the national spotlight. Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, which serves as a major referral hub for the entire country, routinely operates beyond its intended capacity. The high influx of patients from across Ghana places significant strain on its infrastructure, medical supplies, and staff.

Healthcare professionals warn that such overcrowding can lead to delayed treatment, increased risk of hospital-acquired infections, and diminished quality of care. The situation also contributes to heightened stress and burnout among medical personnel who must manage overwhelming caseloads with limited resources.

This is not the first time Korle-Bu has faced public scrutiny over congestion issues. Similar incidents in the past have prompted calls for systemic reforms, but stakeholders say progress has been slow, and the underlying problems persist.

In response to the latest video, civil society organizations and health advocates are calling for immediate intervention. Recommendations include expanding bed capacity, accelerating infrastructure upgrades at major hospitals, and strengthening district and regional health facilities to reduce the burden on tertiary institutions like Korle-Bu.

As of press time, the management of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital had not issued an official statement regarding the video. However, the footage has intensified demands for accountability and long-term solutions to ensure patients receive care in dignified conditions.
