In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the faltering fortunes of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, the Life Patron of the club, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appointed a new Board of Directors.
The announcement, made by the Manhyia Palace on Saturday, introduces a board composed of accomplished business leaders tasked with providing strategic direction and restoring the club to its former glory.
Mr. James Osei Brown, the Chief Executive Officer of Joshob Construction, has been named as the new Board Chairman. He will be supported by Vice-Chairman Kwasi Osei Ofori, who is the CEO of Rocksure. The board is further strengthened by the inclusion of Kofi Amoa-Abban, the Founder and CEO of the Rigworld Group.
The appointment signals a clear intent by the Asantehene to inject high-level corporate governance and business acumen into the club’s administration. The new board is expected to leverage its collective wealth of experience to provide sound advice and strategic oversight, steering the club through a challenging period.
For several seasons, the Kumasi-based giants have struggled to assert their dominance in the Ghana Premier League, failing to replicate the championship-winning form of years past. The club’s recent performances have fallen short of the high expectations of its vast and passionate fanbase.
The establishment of this new board also raises questions about the future of the current Interim Management Committee (IMC), which has been overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the club. It is anticipated that the new board will now take full responsibility for the club’s strategic leadership.
The announcement has generated a wave of mixed reactions from the Kotoko faithful on social media. While some fans have welcomed the calibre of the new appointees, others have expressed skepticism, urging a more fundamental overhaul of the club’s operations.
“Unless Otumfuo chairs the Board himself, this will amount to nothing because the people playing power games are still there,” one user commented on social media.
Another user struck a more cautious tone, writing, “Is this going to be a turning point for the club or business as usual? Well, let’s keep our fingers crossed.”
A third post read, “Every day there’s something new, but nothing comes of it. With all due respect, Nana, please think outside the box. The people running Asante Kotoko are not helping Asante Kotoko.”
Some fans also offered advice to the incoming leadership. “They are welcome, but they should be careful they don’t appoint a CEO who will fight with them,” one user cautioned.
The new board is expected to begin its work imminently, with the primary objectives of stabilizing the club, improving its competitive performance, and re-engaging with its disillusioned fanbase.
