NPP unveils Baba Ali Yussif as candidate for crucial Ayawaso East By-Election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially acclaimed its Constituency Secretary, Baba Ali Yussif, as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.

The nomination, confirmed in a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, follows a consensus-building process designed to ensure unity ahead of the March 3rd poll.

Yussif was formally endorsed during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee and Delegates Conference held on Sunday, February 8. His selection is the result of deliberations by a National Executive Committee (NEC)-appointed Candidate Search Committee, chaired by former General Secretary John Boadu. The committee was tasked with identifying a strong candidate to contest the seat, historically held by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NPP’s swift and unified move stands in contrast to reported internal disputes within the NDC following its recent primaries in the constituency, which have been marred by allegations of vote-buying.

In the statement, Mr. Kodua Frimpong urged party faithful to close ranks and mobilise support for the candidate. “The Party therefore calls on all members, supporters, and sympathisers of the NPP to rally solidly behind Baba Ali Yussif, who represents the Party’s best opportunity to secure victory and help restore hope, effective representation, and prosperity to the Ayawaso East Constituency,” the release stated.

With the Electoral Commission finalising preparations for the March 3 by-election, political focus shifts to whether the NPP’s coordinated strategy can overcome the NDC’s longstanding stronghold in Ayawaso East.
