NIB makes historic first donation to newly established Ghana Sports Fund

The National Investment Bank (NIB) has made history by becoming the first corporate entity to donate to the newly established Ghana Sports Fund. The bank presented a cheque for GH¢100,000 to support the government’s initiative to revitalize sports development across the country.

The donation was officially handed over at a brief ceremony in Accra by Mrs. Esther Agyemang Prempeh, the Acting Chief Client Experience and Corporate Communications Officer, on behalf of NIB’s management.

Presenting the cheque, Mrs. Agyemang Prempeh underscored the bank’s commitment to national development beyond the financial sector. “NIB fully appreciates the crucial role sports play in national unity and development,” she stated. “We are proud to be the first to support this fund and hope it serves as a catalyst for the comprehensive development of Ghanaian sports.”

Receiving the donation on behalf of the fund, Dr. David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, expressed profound gratitude to the bank for its swift response. He was joined by the Chairperson of the Support Fund Board, Prof. Korye Anim-Wright.

“We are delighted by this generous gesture from NIB,” Dr. Wuaku said. “To be the first institution to believe in this vision and contribute is truly commendable.” He reiterated the Board’s commitment to ensuring the fund achieves its mandate, which includes financing infrastructure development, supporting athlete welfare, and nurturing grassroots programs to unearth young talent.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, who also graced the occasion, lauded the National Investment Bank for its patriotism and leadership. He noted that the lack of sustainable funding has long been the biggest impediment to the growth of Ghanaian sports.

“Funding has consistently been our greatest challenge,” Hon. Adams remarked. “This timely donation from NIB means the Sports Fund can now effectively commence its operations. I want to assure the bank and the public that every pesewa received will be used judiciously and strictly for the purpose for which the fund was established.”

The ceremony was attended by key officials from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, including Chief Director Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Director of Accounts Madam Perpetual Tawiah, and other ministry staff. Representatives from the National Investment Bank and the Ghana Sports Fund Board were also present to witness the historic presentation.

The Ghana Sports Fund is expected to provide a sustainable financial base to support athletes, upgrade facilities, and implement long-term development programs, moving away from the over-reliance on the national budget.
