New Ghana Boxing Federation board sets sights on amateur revival

The Ghana Boxing Federation has ushered in a new era of leadership, with President Dauda Fuseini and his freshly constituted Executive Board vowing to overhaul the country’s amateur boxing landscape.

During a high-stakes engagement with Sports and Recreation Minister Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, the board laid out an aggressive rebranding strategy designed to restore public confidence and attract corporate investment. Mr. Fuseini pledged total alignment with government policy and assured the Minister of a leadership anchored in accountability.

But the Minister’s response was pointed.

Hon. Adams did not mask his frustration with the sport’s current trajectory, lamenting a culture of self-interest he said has eaten deep into boxing’s foundations. He called for an immediate cultural reset—one that prioritises country over ego, and discipline over expediency.

“We are losing the soul of the sport,” he warned. “If we do not teach our young athletes respect, sportsmanship, and self-discipline from the amateur level, we will have no future champions to speak of.”

The Minister did not stop at values.

He issued a firm warning against the creeping menace of match-fixing, describing it as a cancer that undermines every effort to build credible competition. He stressed that no amount of talent development can survive in an environment where corruption is tolerated.

On the perennial issue of funding, Hon. Adams urged the federation to think beyond government subventions. He called for strategic planning capable of unlocking private sector sponsorship and urged stronger collaboration with security agencies to create sustainable career paths for boxers.

His closing charge was unambiguous: the GBF must craft a fresh, compelling narrative—one that sells hope, discipline, and excellence. Only then, he argued, can Ghana boxing reclaim its place among the world’s best.

The meeting marked the first formal interface between the new board and the Ministry—a signal that both parties are prepared to move beyond rhetoric and into action.
