NAIMOS warns interference from influential figures is hampering fight against galamsey

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has expressed concern that continued interference from influential individuals, particularly traditional authorities and political actors, is undermining efforts to combat illegal mining in Ghana.

Addressing a stakeholder engagement in Sekondi on Sunday, December 7, the Deputy Director of Operations at NAIMOS, Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Satekla, said despite the Secretariat’s commitment to ending galamsey, the actions of some chiefs, politicians and other powerful figures continue to obstruct enforcement operations.

The meeting brought together 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from the Western Region, along with two Regional Police Commanders.

Lt. Col. Satekla explained that effective enforcement in illegal mining hotspots depends heavily on strong collaboration with local authorities, particularly in maintaining designated “no-go” zones. However, he noted that this crucial support is often compromised.

“Like every institution, we face our own challenges. One of our biggest obstacles is interference from influential individuals. We encounter this from political leaders, chiefs and other community stakeholders where we operate, and it remains a serious problem that must be addressed. In addition, logistics constraints continue to affect our operations,” he said.

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and urged all MMDCEs to fully support President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed efforts to end the menace.
