Mobile money transactions hit record GH¢518.4bn in December 2025

Mobile money transactions in Ghana surged to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, highlighting the growing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial system, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The December outturn marked the highest monthly transaction value recorded in 2025, driven by heightened consumer spending during the festive season and the continued expansion of mobile money usage. Transaction volumes rose to 982 million, up from 892 million in November, reflecting increased activity and broader adoption of digital payment platforms.

The number of active mobile money accounts increased significantly to 26.7 million in December from 25.5 million in November, while registered accounts climbed to 80.5 million, pointing to sustained gains in financial inclusion.

The mobile money agent network also grew, with 491,000 active agents recorded at the end of the year.

Balances on mobile money wallets reached a 2025 high of GH¢39.6 billion, indicating stronger liquidity in the digital payments ecosystem and rising confidence in mobile wallets as a store of value.

Interoperable mobile money transactions strengthened as well, with values increasing to GH¢5.8 billion in December from GH¢4.9 billion in November, supported by higher cross-network transfers during the holiday period.

Meanwhile, traditional payment methods continued to lag behind. Cheque transactions totalled GH¢37.3 billion in December, far below mobile money values, while electronic channels such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transactions.

Overall, the data confirms mobile money’s role as the backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system, with seasonal spending, expanding agent networks and rising smartphone use expected to support continued growth into 2026.
