MiDA unveils ambitious plan to transform Voltarian basin into major agro-industrial hub

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) has outlined an ambitious strategy to transform the Voltaian Basin into a thriving agro-industrial ecosystem, a move officials say could significantly bolster Ghana’s food security and agricultural exports.

The plan was highlighted during a recent working tour of the basin, led by MiDA Board Chairman Charles Abugre and its Chief Executive Officer, Alexander Kofi-Mensah Mould.

While specific details of the initiative are still being finalized, the tour signals a strong commitment to unlocking the agricultural potential of the vast region. The Voltaian Basin, with its significant water resources and arable land, has long been identified as a key area for large-scale agricultural development.

The proposed transformation is expected to involve the development of irrigation schemes to enable year-round farming, the establishment of processing facilities to add value to raw commodities, and the creation of structured out-grower schemes to integrate local farmers into the value chain. The ultimate goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that connects primary production to processing and eventual export, generating jobs and boosting local economies.

The visit by the MiDA leadership to the basin underscores the authority’s focus on sustainable, large-scale projects that drive economic growth. By developing the Voltaian Basin into an agro-industrial zone, MiDA aims to replicate the success of similar interventions in other parts of the country, positioning the area as a critical pillar of Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda.
