Metro Mass Transit issues eviction ultimatum over alleged encroachment at Opera Square Terminal

Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) has issued a strong warning over what it describes as the illegal encroachment of its operational base at the Opera Square terminal in central Accra, giving unauthorized occupants a two-week ultimatum to vacate the premises.

According to a statement from the state-owned transport operator, the encroachment is significantly hindering its ability to manage its fleet and provide efficient services to the commuting public. The company warns that the situation, if left unchecked, could disrupt transportation services along key routes that rely on the terminal.

An official of MMTL, simply named Apaw-Wiredu in the report, confirmed that the company has formally served an eviction notice to the alleged encroachers. The notice includes a clear two-week deadline for them to vacate the area, after which the company may be forced to take further action to reclaim its property.

“We have issued a formal eviction notice with a two-week ultimatum,” Apaw-Wiredu was quoted as saying. The move signals the company’s determination to assert its control over the facility and restore order at the terminal, which serves as a critical hub for intra-city and inter-regional travel.

The development raises concerns about the management of public assets and the pressures of urban congestion in the capital. The Opera Square area, a bustling commercial zone, has long been a hotspot for both authorized transport operators and informal traders and private vehicles, often leading to clashes over space.

If the encroachment persists beyond the ultimatum, Metro Mass Transit may be compelled to involve state security agencies to enforce the eviction and protect its infrastructure. For now, passengers and commuters who rely on the terminal will be watching closely to see if the dispute is resolved without disrupting their daily commute.
