Messi breaks Pele’s free-kick record in Inter Miami victory

Lionel Messi has set a new career milestone, surpassing Brazilian legend Pelé for the most direct free-kick goals in football history.

The 38-year-old Argentine scored his 71st goal from a dead-ball situation during Inter Miami’s 3-2 comeback win against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The historic goal came in the 61st minute, leveling the score as Miami rallied to secure the victory.

Messi’s free kick, which found the net despite a slight deflection, moves him past Pelé’s previous total of 70. While he now holds the record over the three-time World Cup winner, the all-time unofficial record remains with former Brazilian midfielder Juninho Pernambucano, who scored 77 free-kick goals during his career.

The goal adds to a career already distinguished by set-piece precision, a skill Messi has honed since his early years at FC Barcelona.

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano praised the forward’s impact following the match. “He is a vital player,” Mascherano said, emphasizing the star’s influence beyond scoring, including his leadership on the field.

The win against NYCFC helped Inter Miami improve their standing in the MLS as the season progresses. With Messi now six goals away from tying Juninho’s record, fans and analysts are watching to see if the veteran forward will continue his pursuit of the all-time mark.
