Commuters who travel daily between Accra and Madina are being warned to brace for significant delays from today, as the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) commences major expansion works on the bridge at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.
The GHA has announced an immediate traffic management plan that will drastically alter the flow of vehicles on one of the capital’s busiest corridors. The project, which involves T-beam launching to expand the bridge on the N1 highway, necessitates the temporary closure of lanes on the northbound carriageway.
According to a statement issued by the authority on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the changes took effect on Monday, March 9, 2026. Lanes on the N4 northbound carriageway heading from Accra towards Madina will be closed to provide a safe workspace for engineers.
To mitigate the impact, traffic flow will be reconfigured. The southbound carriageway, which typically handles four lanes of traffic from Madina towards Accra, will be converted into a dual carriageway, with two lanes allocated for traffic in each direction.
The GHA has indicated that this temporary arrangement is expected to remain in place for approximately four months.
For the thousands of motorists who navigate the interchange daily, the lane reduction is expected to significantly extend travel times, particularly during the morning and evening peak hours. Drivers heading from central Accra towards Madina and the eastern suburbs can expect slower-moving traffic as vehicles merge into fewer lanes. Conversely, those traveling towards Accra may also experience intermittent congestion due to the redirection of traffic.
In its statement, the Ghana Highway Authority emphasized that the temporary measure is crucial for ensuring the safety of both construction workers and road users during the critical phase of the expansion.
Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, adhere strictly to all traffic signs and diversions, and cooperate with traffic officials who will be stationed along the corridor to manage movement. For further inquiries, the public is encouraged to contact the GHA’s Public Affairs Division via WhatsApp at 0551622244.
The upgrade is part of a broader government initiative to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow on the Accra-Tema Motorway, one of Ghana’s most vital urban transport routes. While the project promises long-term relief for commuters, the coming months will test the patience of drivers who must endure the immediate pain of construction to reap the future benefits.
