Mahama urges Ghanaians to extend Ramadan virtues beyond Eid

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians, particularly the Muslim community, to uphold the principles of discipline, compassion, and unity cultivated during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing that the Eid al-Fitr celebration should mark the continuation of this spiritual commitment.

Addressing a large congregation of worshippers at Independence Square on Friday, March 20, 2026, the President stated that the significance of the occasion extends beyond festivity to a renewed dedication to righteous living and social responsibility.

“My brothers and sisters, Eid is not only a celebration, it is a call to continuity,” President Mahama said. “Let us carry forward the spirit of Ramadan in how we treat one another, in how we serve our communities, in how we uphold justice and fairness.”

He urged citizens to remain guided by compassion for the vulnerable, kindness toward neighbours, and integrity in their daily lives, noting that the principles of sacrifice and self-discipline observed during the fasting period should continue to shape behaviour throughout the year.

The President congratulated Muslims in Ghana and around the world on the successful completion of the holy month, describing Eid al-Fitr as a moment for thanksgiving and reflection. “Today is a day of gratitude for the strength, patience and faith that carried us through Ramadan,” he remarked.

A Model of Coexistence

President Mahama used the platform to reaffirm Ghana’s reputation for religious harmony, positioning the nation as a global example of peaceful coexistence among diverse faiths and cultures.

“Our diversity of faith and culture is not a weakness; it is our strength. Muslims and Christians celebrate each other’s holy days and coexist as one people. This harmony is a precious gift, and we must protect it,” he stated.

Highlighting the everyday expressions of unity, he added: “We participate in each other’s ceremonies, and we coexist as one people. This harmony is a precious gift, and we must protect it.”

A Call to Reject Extremism

The President cautioned against forces that threaten national cohesion, urging Ghanaians to consciously reject division, extremism, and intolerance.

“Let us reject anything that will divide us. Let us reject extremism and intolerance. Let us choose dialogue over discord, unity over division, and peace over conflict,” he said.

He stressed that preserving national harmony is critical to sustaining Ghana’s stability and long-term development.

A Collective Effort for Development

Touching on governance, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusive development under the Reset Agenda, with a focus on job creation, education, infrastructure, healthcare, and targeted support for underserved communities, including Zongo areas.

He underscored, however, that achieving these goals requires a collective national effort. “Government alone cannot achieve this. We need your partnership, your prayers, and your continued commitment to national development,” President Mahama concluded.

The Eid al-Fitr gathering brought together Muslims from across the capital for a day of prayers, reflection, and renewed calls for national cohesion.
