Mahama urges Ghanaian youth to seize digital opportunities for national development

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s youth to harness the power of digital technologies and innovation as the driving force for the nation’s future development, emphasizing that the tools for global competitiveness are now in their hands.

Delivering his address at the 69th Independence Day celebration, the President directly engaged the nation’s young population, acknowledging both their immense potential and the real-world challenges they face.

“To the young people of this country, I see you, I hear you and I believe in your potential,” President Mahama stated.

He framed digital literacy not just as a skill, but as a gateway to the global economy. “In your hands, a smartphone transforms into a classroom, a business platform, a creative studio and a gateway to the global economy,” he told the gathering.

Government Moves to Address Youth Frustrations

While championing a message of optimism, the President did not shy away from the economic realities confronting many young Ghanaians, particularly regarding unemployment. He acknowledged their frustrations and outlined the government’s strategy to create a more enabling environment.

“I also recognise your frustrations, and that is why government is investing in digital infrastructure, entrepreneurship programmes and innovation hubs across the country,” he assured them.

These initiatives, he added, are slated for major urban centers, including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, and Kofidua, aiming to decentralize opportunity and foster innovation nationwide.

To further bridge the gap between education and employment, President Mahama announced that the government is reforming the educational curriculum to better align with the demands of the modern economy. Concurrently, internship and apprenticeship programmes are being expanded to provide young people with practical, hands-on experience as they transition from school into the workforce.

A Call for Discipline and Excellence

The President concluded his address to the youth with a call for personal responsibility, urging them to pair their digital savvy with strong values.

“But success will also depend on discipline, resilience and excellence,” he cautioned. “The future belongs to those who prepare for it.”

He extended his congratulations to the 52 students who received the President’s Independence Day Award and to Kweku Secondary Technical School for emerging victorious in the 69th Independence Day quiz competition, holding them up as examples of the nation’s bright future.

“All of you represent the promise of Ghana’s future,” he said. “Wherever you are and whatever you do, do it with excellence — do it for Ghana, do it for Africa and do it for the generations yet unborn.”
