Mahama tours Bono Region, inspects key infrastructure projects

President John Dramani Mahama has embarked on a two-day working visit to the Bono Region, inspecting a series of ongoing development projects and calling on contractors to accelerate work to meet completion deadlines.

The tour, which took place on Thursday, focused on critical infrastructure in education, security, and transportation, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing regional development.

Focus on Educational Infrastructure at Sunyani SHS

The President’s first stop was the Sunyani Senior High School (SHS), where he assessed the progress of several projects under the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) New Targeted and Emergency Projects (NTEmP).

The initiative at the school aims to address infrastructure deficits and includes the construction of a modern classroom block, a new 12-seater washroom facility, and a dedicated science laboratory to bolster practical learning. To improve teacher accommodation and welfare, two two-storey semi-detached staff flats are also being built. A major highlight of the visit was the inspection of a two-storey, 12-unit science laboratory complex, designed to significantly expand access to science education for the student population.

Addressing contractors and project managers on site, President Mahama stressed the importance of adhering to project timelines. He noted that the timely delivery of these facilities is crucial for creating a conducive academic environment, easing congestion, and improving sanitation for both students and staff.

During the visit, the President also engaged with school authorities, who reiterated the urgent need for continued infrastructure development to accommodate the school’s growing student numbers.

Commissioning of New Security Hub

As part of his regional tour, President Mahama officially inspected the newly inaugurated Bono Regional Command of the National Signals Bureau. The facility is designed to serve as a central hub for signals intelligence and security coordination.

Security officials briefed the President on the bureau’s operational capabilities, highlighting its role in strengthening surveillance and enhancing rapid response mechanisms. The new command is expected to be instrumental in addressing emerging security threats in the region, including armed robbery, cybercrime, chieftaincy disputes, farmer-herder conflicts, and cross-border smuggling.

Advancing Road and Air Transport

President Mahama also toured the ongoing construction of the 34-kilometre Sunyani Outer Ring Road. This major infrastructure project is intended to improve traffic flow within the Sunyani Municipality and enhance connectivity to surrounding communities, ultimately boosting local economic activity by facilitating the smoother movement of goods and services.

Concluding his tour of infrastructure sites, the President visited Nsoatre in the Sunyani West Municipality to inspect the proposed site for a new Sunyani Airport. The project, when completed, is expected to enhance regional air transport, promote tourism, and attract significant investment into the Bono Region.
