Mahama dismisses third-term calls, reaffirms commitment to constitutional term limits

Former President John Dramani Mahama has firmly rejected suggestions from a section of the public urging him to seek a third term in office, reaffirming his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional term limits.

The former leader’s response comes after an admirer publicly praised his tenure and encouraged him to consider a return to the presidency beyond the two-term limit stipulated by the 1992 Constitution.

In his reaction, Mr. Mahama unequivocally dismissed the proposal, emphasizing that the country’s supreme law clearly bars any president from serving more than two terms. He noted that leadership must be anchored in the rule of law, rather than personal ambition or public pressure, regardless of the source.

“The constitution is clear on the term limits for a president,” Mr. Mahama stated, underscoring his dedication to upholding the democratic principles that guide Ghana’s governance structure.

His comments serve to reinforce his stance that altering presidential term limits is not an option under the current legal framework. While the debate surrounding a possible third-term presidency occasionally resurfaces in Ghanaian political discourse, Mr. Mahama’s latest remarks reiterate that such a move remains unconstitutional.

The former president’s position highlights a continued commitment to respecting the constitutional provisions that underpin Ghana’s democracy.
