The government of President John Mahama has approved a significant upward adjustment in the monthly allowances for paramount chiefs and queen mothers across the country.
According to an announcement by the Minister for Local Government and Chieftaincy Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, paramount chiefs will now receive a monthly allowance of GH¢3,000, while queen mothers will be paid GH¢2,400. This marks a 300% increase from the previous rates.
The minister confirmed that the funds for the revised allowances have already been released to the various Regional Houses of Chiefs for immediate disbursement to the beneficiaries.
In a statement, the government emphasized that the increment reflects its deep recognition of the indispensable role traditional leaders play in local governance, conflict resolution, and fostering community development. The move is intended to improve the welfare of the chiefs and queen mothers, thereby empowering them to more effectively support their communities and execute their traditional duties.
This policy decision is expected to strengthen the partnership between the state and traditional institutions, which are often at the forefront of grassroots development and cultural preservation.
The announcement follows recent efforts by the administration to resolve chieftaincy disputes peacefully and underscores its focus on the chieftaincy sector.
