Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has warned fellow contestants and their supporters against personal attacks as delegates vote in Saturday’s presidential primary to choose the party’s flagbearer.
He noted that excessive hostility could harm the party’s unity and public image.
His remarks come amid rising concerns that the 2026 NPP campaign has become one of the most contentious in recent years, with ongoing attacks and counter-attacks among some candidates’ camps.
Speaking to Channel One TV’s Hanson Agyemang at the NPP headquarters on January 31, 2026, the former General Secretary said certain boundaries had already been crossed.
“I think that some red lines have been crossed. There are five of us contesting. At the end of the day, only one person will be elected; five cannot go into one,” Mr. Agyepong said.
He urged party members to act with restraint and respect, emphasizing that harsh language could have long-term consequences for the party.
“People have to be very decorous, civil, and careful about what they say about others. At the end of the day, you don’t know who will win; we are all hoping that the winner is us,” he added.
Mr. Agyepong stressed that the goal of the primaries should be to present a candidate capable of uniting the party and appealing to all Ghanaians.
“After we win, we should be able to represent our party well to earn the respect and confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
He questioned how the party could campaign effectively if internal rivalries turned into personal attacks.
“If you have criticized and said unprintable things about your fellow contestants, how do we then go and promote the person?” Mr. Agyepong asked.
