Kenyan floods claim 108 lives as heavy rains displace thousands

The death toll from weeks of relentless heavy rains and flash floods across Kenya has risen to 108, according to the National Police Service. The severe weather, which began on March 6, has also displaced more than 2,700 families and caused widespread destruction.

In a statement released Saturday, police officials confirmed that the ongoing downpours have overwhelmed drainage systems, raising fears of continued flooding in the coming days. The country’s power infrastructure has also sustained significant damage, leaving several areas without electricity.

Authorities are warning residents in low-lying and flood-prone zones to remain vigilant as overflowing drainage channels exacerbate the crisis. Emergency response teams are working to assist displaced families, but the scale of the disaster has strained resources.

The floods add to a series of extreme weather events affecting East Africa, underscoring growing concerns about climate resilience in the region. Officials say assessments are ongoing, and further updates on the humanitarian situation are expected in the coming days.
