Joojo Rocky Obeng, Director of Elections for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s campaign, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to request assistance from other security agencies, including the Ghana Armed Forces, if the police service lacks sufficient personnel to secure the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary on January 31.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme on January 7, Mr Obeng emphasised the scale of the exercise, which will involve voting at 277 centres across the country.
“If need be and they need the assistance of other security agencies to support them, they shouldn’t hesitate to do so,” he said, drawing on his experience as a former Regional Minister who chaired a Regional Security Council.
He noted that it is standard practice during elections for the police to form a taskforce that includes personnel from the Armed Forces, Immigration Service, and even the Ghana National Fire Service.
“This election is taking place in 277 centres,” Mr Obeng continued. “The Ghana Police Service and the IGP should carry out a good assessment because we do not want to experience any chaos.”
He stressed that his remarks were offered as respectful advice from someone familiar with election security planning and were not intended to question the police’s capabilities. He cited security challenges observed during the recent Ablekuma constituency by-election as a reminder of the need for thorough preparation.
Mr Obeng also reiterated that venue selection was handled by the Electoral Commission (EC) and that overall security responsibility rests with the police.
The NPP primary will feature five vetted candidates vying to lead the party into the 2028 general election: Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Mr Obeng expressed confidence in Mr Agyapong’s prospects, saying the campaign believes victory is already secured and that a peaceful process now depends on effective coordination between the police and the EC.
