Jordan Ayew on target but Leicester remain in relegation danger

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew came off the bench to score a late equaliser for Leicester City, but a 1-1 draw against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield Wednesday was not enough to lift the Foxes out of the Championship relegation zone.

Leicester, desperate for maximum points against the league’s weakest side, dominated long spells of the contest but were repeatedly thwarted by an inspired performance from Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles.

The hosts stunned Leicester inside two minutes. Jerry Yates capitalised on hesitant defending to bundle the ball home from close range following a corner.

Charles stands tall

The visitors responded with intensity, carving out a succession of clear chances. Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku missed an early opportunity to level, while efforts from Oliver Skipp and Stephy Mavididi were expertly kept out by the in-form Charles.

Despite relentless pressure before the break, Leicester went into half-time trailing.

The second half followed a similar script. Leicester pushed forward, hit the woodwork, and forced a series of saves, but Charles remained unbeatable. Wednesday nearly doubled their lead when Liam Palmer dragged a shot narrowly wide on the counter.

Ayew delivers

With six minutes remaining, Ayew produced a moment of quality. The Ghana captain collected the ball and fired a powerful right-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 – his sixth league goal of the season.

Leicester pushed desperately for a winner in stoppage time, and Ayew went close again, but Charles denied him with one final save to secure a point for the hosts.

The result leaves Leicester in 22nd place, still one point adrift of safety with only five matches left to play.
