Interim boxing committee granted extension to finalize reforms , sets elections timeline

The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC), tasked with reviving the sport after its suspension, has been granted a crucial extension of its mandate to complete a sweeping reform agenda, paving the way for transparent elections later this year.

Inaugurated in September 2025, the GBIMC has successfully restored professional boxing to the national calendar, overseeing several high-profile events including the Tarkwa Boxing Explosion, Cabic Big Fight Night, and Best of Bukom II. These events were conducted under newly implemented, stringent medical and anti-doping protocols, with the Committee also securing athlete insurance partnerships.

Following the submission of a detailed progress report to the Minister of Sports and Recreation and the Director General of the National Sports Authority, the Committee’s request for an extension was approved. The extension comes with clear guidelines and a defined timeline.

“The extension will allow the Committee to complete critical reforms and prepare for transparent elections,” stated Samir Captan, Chairman of the GBIMC. “We call on all stakeholders to consolidate the gains made so far to safeguard the future of professional boxing in Ghana.”

The extended tenure, spanning February to April 2026, will focus on several outstanding reforms. Key among them are the review of licensing standards and disciplinary codes, the formal establishment of an Independent Medical Commission, and the rollout of a comprehensive digital health database and administrative portal.

Additional priorities include conducting mandatory orientation and certification programs for stakeholders, strengthening regulatory oversight, and expanding existing insurance and medical schemes for boxers.

This work will culminate in the finalization of constitutional reforms, setting the stage for the election of a new, permanent governing body. The GBIMC has outlined an election calendar scheduled for May to June 2026.

The Committee’s roadmap follows extensive stakeholder engagement, including a major meeting in December 2025 to address governance, legal, and operational challenges facing the sport. A forthcoming stakeholder meeting and press briefing will be held to outline the next steps in the process.
