A 43-year-old man has been remanded into police custody by an Accra court for allegedly impersonating a soldier to defraud a businessman of GH¢192,000.
Prosecutors told the court that the accused falsely presented himself as a member of the Ghana Armed Forces. Using this fabricated identity, he allegedly gained the victim’s trust by promising to provide security services and related assistance, leading to the financial transaction.
Investigations by the Ghana Police Service subsequently revealed that the suspect had no affiliation with the military. Authorities assert that the impersonation was central to the fraud scheme, lending the accused an air of credibility and authority.
The arrest followed a report lodged by the businessman. After remanding the suspect, the court adjourned the case to allow for further police investigation. The accused is expected to be brought before the court again at a later date.
This incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about impersonation crimes, particularly those involving individuals falsely claiming to be security personnel. The police have reiterated warnings to the public to exercise caution and verify the identities of individuals purporting to be from security agencies, especially when discussions involve financial dealings.
Law enforcement authorities reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing fraud and impersonation cases, vowing that offenders will face the full rigors of the law. The investigation remains active, with the possibility of additional charges being filed.
