Hong Kong orders independent inquiry into deadly Wang Fuk Court fire

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has ordered an independent committee to investigate the fire at Wang Fuk Court housing complex that killed at least 151 people. The committee, to be led by a judge, will examine the causes and recommend reforms to prevent similar tragedies.

Last Wednesday, seven of the eight tower blocks at the complex, which were undergoing renovations, were engulfed in flames. Investigators found that the protective netting used around the buildings did not meet flame retardant standards. At least 13 people, including directors of a construction company, have been arrested for suspected manslaughter.

The fire, the deadliest in Hong Kong in over 70 years, spread rapidly across blocks via flammable materials and faulty protective mesh. It took more than 2,000 firefighters about 40 hours to fully extinguish. Officials continue to recover bodies, and the death toll may rise.

Residents reported that fire alarms did not sound, and inspections revealed alarms in all eight blocks were ineffective. In response, the Buildings Department has temporarily suspended works on 30 private projects while investigations continue, expected to last three to four weeks.

Chief Executive Lee acknowledged the need for reform but did not directly answer questions about his job, stating: “Yes, it is a tragedy, it is a big fire. Yes, we need reform…that is exactly why we must act seriously to ensure all these loopholes are plucked.”
