‘He should have realized he wouldn’t be able to handle the team’ – Nyaho- Tamakloe criticises Otto Addo

Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has launched a scathing assessment of Otto Addo’s tenure as Black Stars head coach, insisting the former trainer should have known from the outset that he was not up to the task.

The outspoken former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman made the remarks following Addo’s dismissal last month after the national team’s dismal performances in the March international friendlies.

Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024 on a 34-month contract, was relieved of his duties after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats to Nigeria and Mali in the friendly matches.

“He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team,” Nyaho-Tamakloe said. “If you know you don’t have what it takes to manage a national team of Ghana’s calibre, you have a responsibility to step aside before causing damage.”

The veteran football administrator’s comments add to mounting scrutiny over the GFA’s recruitment process, with many questioning how Addo was handed a long-term deal despite a patchy previous stint with the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, the GFA has reportedly shortlisted three candidates for the vacant position, with the Executive Committee scheduled to meet today, April 7, 2026, to deliberate and narrow down a preferred choice for the job.

Addo’s departure leaves Ghana searching for its fifth permanent coach since 2020 as the four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions seek to revive their fortunes ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
