GUTA President calls for price reductions following cedi appreciation

Dr. Clement Boateng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), has issued a strong appeal to traders and businesses nationwide to lower their prices in response to the sustained appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Speaking on the current economic climate, Dr. Boateng acknowledged the broad positive impact of the stronger local currency on import and operational costs. However, he expressed concern that some traders are refusing to adjust their prices downward, denying consumers the benefits of improved macroeconomic conditions.

He warned that such a stance is ultimately counterproductive and could harm the very businesses that maintain high prices. In Ghana’s highly competitive market, Dr. Boateng argued, sustained business growth depends on turnover, which is fueled by sales volume and customer patronage.

“If you decide not to reduce prices for the consumer to also benefit, you do so at your own expense,” stated Dr. Boateng. “Your competitor will sell faster, restock more quickly, achieve the necessary turnover, and thrive. Meanwhile, you will be left with unsold goods.”

The GUTA President linked the recent downward trend in national inflation figures to observable price moderation in the marketplace. He urged all traders to align with this trend, emphasizing that passing on cost savings is crucial for maintaining market share and ensuring long-term viability.

“Business thrives on turnover,” he reiterated. “A responsive and fair pricing strategy is good for the customer and essential for the trader’s own success.”

The call from GUTA leadership is expected to influence pricing discussions across various sectors as the nation observes the effects of the cedi’s performance on the cost of goods

The Ghana Union of Traders Association is the leading umbrella body for traders in Ghana, advocating for the interests of its members and promoting fair trade practices.
