GUTA opposes government’s local cargo insurance directive

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has strongly criticised the government’s decision to enforce a local cargo insurance directive, citing a lack of proper consultation with stakeholders.

In a statement signed by Secretary-General Richard Amamoo on January 28, 2026, GUTA expressed concerns over the mandatory imposition of local insurance on businesses, inadequate stakeholder engagement, and the limited competitiveness and experience of local insurers.

The association warned that penalising businesses for failing to use local insurance is unfair, particularly when local providers may not have the capacity or track record to manage such responsibilities effectively.

GUTA has called on the National Insurance Commission and other relevant authorities to suspend the directive and engage stakeholders meaningfully to resolve these issues.
