GTEC expedites accreditation for specialised nursing degree programmes under Mahama Cares initiative

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced a fast-tracked accreditation process for new Post-Basic Specialised Nursing degree programmes to be funded under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as the Mahama Cares Initiative.

Five nursing and midwifery institutions across the country have been selected to pioneer the advanced degree programmes. The specialised fields of study include Emergency Nursing, Cardiology Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Endocrinology Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, and Oncology Nursing.

The selected institutions are:

· Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Tamale
· Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Nursing School, Kumasi
· Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Kumasi
· Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Korle-Bu
· Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing School (PON/CCN), Korle Bu

The move was confirmed by the Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Jinapor, during a courtesy call on the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC), Philomina A. N. Woolley, in Accra on Tuesday.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between GTEC and the N&MC to ensure the swift and successful accreditation of the proposed programmes.

Professor Jinapor commended the Registrar for her steadfast oversight of the nursing and midwifery education sector. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Director for Accreditation, Saaka Sayuti, and heads of legal, nursing accreditation, and public relations departments.

“We assure the Council of our full support in getting these specialised programmes accredited within the shortest possible time,” Prof. Jinapor stated.

In her response, Registrar Philomina Woolley welcomed the GTEC team and expressed her appreciation for the visit. She provided a briefing on the Council’s activities and detailed the readiness of the five selected institutions to commence the degree programmes.

The initiative aims to significantly upgrade specialist healthcare training in Ghana, addressing critical skill gaps and enhancing the quality of advanced patient care nationwide through the Mahama Cares funding framework.
