The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has suspended five officers from its Customs Division following the discovery of discrepancies involving transit cargo destined for Niger.
In a statement issued on February 24, 2026, the Authority announced the immediate interdiction of the officers pending the outcome of a full-scale internal investigation.
The action stems from an enforcement operation conducted on February 18, 2026, during which officials examined a consignment declared as transit cargo for onward movement to Niger. According to the GRA, preliminary findings revealed irregularities in the accompanying documentation and lapses in compliance with established transit procedures.
“The decision follows preliminary findings arising from an enforcement operation… The operation revealed discrepancies in documentation and compliance with established transit procedures, prompting a detailed internal review,” the statement said.
While the Authority did not disclose the specific nature of the discrepancies, it indicated that early assessments pointed to possible procedural breaches warranting further scrutiny. The GRA noted that the investigation would seek to establish the full facts, including the extent of individual involvement and any departures from laid-down protocols.
“Additional officers may be invited to assist with the investigation where necessary, and upon conclusion of the process, appropriate administrative action will be taken in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” the statement added.
Transit cargo operations are a critical component of Ghana’s trade regime, given the country’s role as a major transit corridor for landlocked neighbours such as Niger. Officials stressed that any procedural lapses could expose the state to revenue losses and undermine confidence in border enforcement systems.
The GRA moved to reassure stakeholders that the interdictions form part of broader efforts to safeguard the integrity of the revenue system.
“GRA wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that this action reflects a commitment to protect national revenue, growth of local industries and promote overall economic development,” the statement read.
The Authority further reaffirmed its dedication to professional standards in revenue mobilisation and enforcement, emphasising that all collection and enforcement procedures would be executed with the highest levels of professionalism and accountability.
