Gov’t unveils transition plan as Damang Mine nears expiry

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced a comprehensive strategy to protect jobs and ensure operational continuity at the Damang Mine, following the impending expiration of its mining lease next month.

In an official statement released on March 24, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that the current mining lease for Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited, is set to expire on April 18, 2026. This follows a one-year extension granted to the operation.

The government has designated the Damang Mine as a critical national asset, citing its substantial contributions to Ghana’s gold output, export revenues, and employment. To manage the transition beyond the lease period, the Ministry has initiated steps to safeguard existing jobs, sustain service contracts, and reassure stakeholders.

A key component of the plan is the launch of a competitive bidding process aimed at securing a credible investor and operator for the mine. The Ministry stated that this approach is designed to ensure the mine’s sustained contribution to national development while promoting long-term, Ghanaian-centred ownership and investment.

Officials have assured that throughout the transition, efforts will be made to ensure the mine continues to deliver lasting benefits to its host communities and the country as a whole.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and responsible stewardship, the Ministry expressed confidence that the next phase of operations will strengthen the mining sector and support sustainable, Ghanaian-driven growth.
