The government is set to present a bill to Parliament seeking to change the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has announced.
Mr. Ayariga disclosed this during a parliamentary leadership media briefing on Tuesday, stating that the proposal forms part of a series of bills and regulations scheduled for the current parliamentary session.
“The Minister for Transport will present the bill to seek parliamentary approval for the proposed change,” he said.
Under Ghana’s parliamentary procedure, any alteration to the name of a state facility requires legislative approval before taking legal effect.
Kotoka International Airport serves as Ghana’s primary international aviation hub, handling passenger travel, cargo operations, and diplomatic movements. A change in name would necessitate updates to official state records and aviation documents.
Mr. Ayariga did not specify an exact timeline for the bill’s formal introduction but confirmed it is included in the Transport Ministry’s agenda for the ongoing parliamentary meeting, which commenced today.
The proposed renaming is expected to undergo parliamentary debate and scrutiny before a final decision is reached.
