Gov’t to begin construction of three stadiums in 2026- Prez Mahama

President John Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to constructing three stadiums this year, following the approval of the 2026 budget.

The project forms a core part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance sports infrastructure across the country, as outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto.

In an interview with CitiSports, President Mahama disclosed that the stadium designs are currently being finalized, with a focus on regions that currently lack such facilities.

“When you look at our manifesto, we stated that all regions that do not have stadiums will be provided with one,” he said.

“In this year’s budget, we have factored in the construction of three stadiums this year, and we will do it every year so that every region will have its stadium. As I speak, the stadium design is being put together.”

The President further emphasised that the new infrastructure would serve a dual purpose, functioning not only as sporting venues but also as economic hubs to stimulate local economies and generate revenue.

“We want to make these structures more than just stadiums but also economic centres,” President Mahama added.

The commitment to sports development was a key pillar of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto. While in opposition, the party pledged to construct multi-purpose sports facilities across the country to promote regional sporting events and inter-school competitions as part of a broader talent development strategy.
