Gov’t greenlights major recruitment drive to tackle NSA Staff shortage

The National Sports Authority (NSA) is poised for a significant operational overhaul following the anticipated approval from the Ministry of Finance to fill over 450 critical staff vacancies nationwide.

This long-awaited clearance will allow the Authority to commence a major recruitment exercise, addressing chronic understaffing that has hampered its ability to effectively manage and develop sports in Ghana.

The NSA, established under the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934), is mandated as the apex body for sports development and promotion. Its core responsibilities include overseeing national sporting facilities, providing technical support to sports federations, and ensuring alignment with government sports policies. However, these functions have been severely strained by a lack of personnel.

Critical Areas of Need

The staff shortage has left several key departments unable to operate at full capacity. Critical vacancies exist for technical field officers, including:

· Coaches and Grassroots Development Officers: Hindering the identification and nurturing of talent at the local level.
· Researchers and Analysts: Limiting the data-driven planning required for long-term sports development.

Furthermore, the NSA’s Estates, Security, Information Technology, and Marketing units are all reportedly “woefully understaffed,” affecting everything from facility maintenance to revenue generation and corporate relations.

Recent Context and Leadership Impact

The announcement of the impending mass recruitment follows a period of scrutiny. Recent media reports highlighted the emergency recruitment of 17 personnel, a process which the Minister of Sports has directed be regularized. Those individuals have been asked to re-apply through the proper channels of the Public Services Commission to ensure they receive standardised and improved conditions of service.

This upcoming recruitment drive is set to formalize and vastly expand upon those initial efforts.

The push for revitalization comes under the leadership of Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. In the absence of a governing Board throughout 2025, the DG has overseen the creation of an Operations Unit, which has been instrumental in fast-tracking the Authority’s activities.

Under Mr. Ampofo Ankrah’s tenure, the NSA has reportedly achieved several milestones, including the recovery of misappropriated and undocumented assets. His leadership is credited with bringing “renewed energy, clarity of purpose, and a pragmatic, result-driven approach” to the organization.

This renewed focus has contributed to tangible improvements in the NSA’s public image, infrastructure recovery, governance of federations, revenue efficiency, and international cooperation. The new recruitment drive is expected to consolidate these gains, providing the much-needed human resources to sustain and accelerate the Authority’s progress.
