Gov’t designates Wednesday as national Fugu-wearing day

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has officially declared every Wednesday as a day for citizens and friends of Ghana to wear the traditional Fugu, also known as Batakari.

In a statement released today, the Sector Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced the initiative as part of the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage. The move aims to strengthen national cultural awareness, affirm the country’s identity, and proudly project Ghanaian heritage globally.

“The Ministry wishes to encourage all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana at home and abroad, to dedicate every Wednesday to the wearing of Fugu in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive accessories,” the statement read.

Beyond cultural promotion, the government anticipates significant socio-economic benefits from the initiative. It is expected to empower local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the value chain, thereby creating expanded business and employment opportunities nationwide.

Minister Gomashie emphasized that the collective embrace of Fugu is intended to strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.

The new directive takes effect immediately.
