The government has stated that the recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, is a procedural step to facilitate an investigation and not a prejudicial action against him.
This clarification was provided by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in response to public discourse surrounding the envoy’s recall. The move follows allegations of bribery linked to the High Commissioner.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Monday, the Minister emphasised that the decision was based on information available and is aligned with the administration’s commitment to transparency and due process.
“The recall allows for investigations into the allegations to be conducted fairly, without any interference or prejudice,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated. “If the investigations conclude that Baba Jamal was not involved in any bribery, he will be exonerated, the decision will be reversed, and he will walk as a free man.”
The Minister, who is also the MP for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, stressed that the government’s approach is firmly guided by the principles of natural justice. He insisted that the official in question is entitled to a fair hearing before any final determinations are made.
“The fair and proper course is to comply with the demands of natural justice and give him a hearing. This is precisely why both the party and the Office of the Special Prosecutor are independently looking into the matter,” he explained.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further sought to assure the public that the government has no interest in engaging in a witch-hunt. He noted that established accountability processes are designed to uphold the integrity of public institutions while simultaneously protecting the rights of individuals facing accusations.
The recall of High Commissioner Baba Jamal Ahmed has sparked significant public interest, with the government now urging patience as the investigative bodies undertake their work.
