The Black Stars suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria in an international friendly at the Ernst Happel Stadium on Friday night, in a performance that exposed significant defensive frailties ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Head coach Otto Addo fielded a strong starting lineup, with captain Jordan Ayew leading the attack alongside Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Antoine Semenyo, and Prince Kwabena Adu. Thomas Partey anchored the midfield, while Lawrence Ati-Zigi started in goal.

Ghana started brightly, showing early composure in possession. However, their momentum was disrupted when referee awarded Austria a penalty after a header from Kevin Danso struck the arm of defender Jonas Adjetey. Marcel Sabitzer stepped up to convert from the spot, giving the hosts a first-half lead.

Despite creating several promising attacking moves, the Black Stars struggled for cutting edge in the final third. Prince Adu found space behind the Austrian defence on multiple occasions, while Semenyo fired over from close range as Ghana pushed for an equalizer. Ati-Zigi produced a crucial save late in the first half to keep the deficit at one goal heading into the break.

Austria emerged with renewed intensity after the restart and quickly put the game beyond Ghana’s reach. Michael Gregoritsch doubled the lead shortly after halftime, finishing from close range following a well-worked move involving Sabitzer. Stefan Posch then added a third, capitalizing on defensive lapses to score unmarked at the back post.

Addo introduced debutants Patric Pfeiffer and Marvin Senaya in an effort to change the tide, but Austria maintained control. Ayew gave Ghana a brief glimmer of hope in the 76th minute, finishing off a pass from Ibrahim Sulemana to make it 3-1.

The hosts responded almost immediately, with Carney Chukwuemeka restoring the three-goal cushion after another incisive attacking move. Kamaldeen Sulemana came close to adding a second for Ghana but narrowly missed the target.

Austria, coached by Ralf Rangnick, sealed the emphatic victory with a fifth goal in stoppage time, underlining their dominance on the night.

The heavy defeat highlights significant concerns for Ghana’s technical team, who will need to reassess both defensive organisation and attacking efficiency as they continue their preparations for the World Cup.
