Ghana sets historic tariff for commercial EV charging stations

In a landmark move for the country’s green transition, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has, for the first time, approved specific electricity tariffs for commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The new pricing framework, announced on Friday, March 13, 2026, aims to provide regulatory clarity for investors in the emerging e-mobility sector and establish a stable pricing structure for commercial charging services.

This development is a critical step in Ghana’s strategy to promote the adoption of electric vehicles, as it addresses one of the key barriers to entry: the uncertainty surrounding the cost of charging. By regulating the price of electricity for this specific use, the PURC is creating a predictable environment for both entrepreneurs looking to set up charging networks and consumers considering a switch to electric vehicles.

While the specific tariff rates were detailed in the commission’s directive, the move is widely seen as a foundational step toward building the necessary infrastructure for a cleaner transportation future. It officially classifies commercial EV charging as a distinct electricity end-use, separate from residential, industrial, or other commercial categories.

Industry stakeholders have long called for such regulatory clarity to de-risk investments in charging infrastructure. With a fixed tariff in place, charging station operators can now more accurately forecast costs and set competitive prices for EV users, potentially accelerating the adoption of e-mobility in Ghana.
