The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has fired head coach Otto Addo, throwing the Black Stars into turmoil less than 100 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision was announced in the early hours of Tuesday, just hours after Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart – the team’s fourth consecutive defeat.
“The decision takes immediate effect,” the GFA said in a statement, adding that a “new technical direction” would be announced in due course.
Crisis Mounts Ahead of World Cup
The dismissal leaves Ghana without a permanent coach as they prepare for a daunting group stage featuring England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.
Pressure had been building after a humiliating 5-1 thrashing by Austria last Friday, followed by Monday’s narrow loss to Germany – sealed by Deniz Undav’s late winner.
A Polarising Tenure
Addo, 50, returned for a second spell and delivered a flawless World Cup qualifying campaign – six wins and one draw. But broader results told a different story.
Since March 2024, he managed just eight wins in 22 matches (a 36.4% win rate), with five draws and nine defeats. The failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations – Ghana’s first absence in two decades – proved fatal to his credibility.
Critics consistently questioned his tactical authority, game management, and ability to maximise a talented squad that includes players like Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo.
What Next for the Black Stars?
The GFA now faces a frantic search for a successor capable of imposing tactical clarity and restoring confidence in a team that former internationals have described as lacking identity and defensive structure.
Addo, who featured for Ghana at the 2006 World Cup and previously led the team as caretaker at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, departs after 746 days in his second stint – credited with securing World Cup qualification but criticised for failing to build a cohesive, competitive side.
With the clock ticking toward June 17, the margin for error has all but vanished.
