Ghana ranked 11th most polluted country in Africa – IQAir Report

Ghana has been named the 11th most polluted country in Africa, according to the 2025 IQAir World Air Quality Report, sparking fresh concerns over the nation’s environmental and public health crisis.

The report, which measures fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as a key pollution indicator, found that Ghana recorded an average PM2.5 concentration of approximately 21.3 micrograms per cubic metre. This level is more than four times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limit of 5 micrograms per cubic metre.

PM2.5 particles are tiny enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. They are primarily produced by vehicle emissions, industrial activities, waste burning, construction dust, and other urban pollution sources.

Accra and Kumasi Among Hardest Hit

Major cities, particularly Accra and Kumasi, have been identified as major contributors to the pollution problem. Heavy traffic congestion, open waste burning, construction dust, and emissions from aging vehicles are worsening air quality in these urban centres. At certain times of the year, pollution levels rise sharply, creating visible smog and reducing visibility.

Health Experts Warn of Serious Risks

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to PM2.5 pollution poses severe health risks, including respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, cardiovascular conditions, stroke, and other long-term complications. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are especially vulnerable.

Environmental researchers note that air pollution has become one of the leading environmental health threats in Ghana, contributing significantly to disease burden and premature deaths. The situation raises concerns about the long-term impact on public health systems and national productivity if left unaddressed.

Call for Stronger Policy Action

While Ghana has made some environmental efforts in recent years, challenges remain in enforcement and public compliance. Experts are calling for stronger policy action, including:

· Stricter enforcement of vehicle emission regulations
· Investment in clean and renewable energy
· Improved waste management systems
· Expanded air quality monitoring networks across major cities

The IQAir report serves as a warning to policymakers and the public about the growing impact of air pollution in Ghana. Environmental advocates stress that sustained, coordinated action is needed to ensure cleaner air, healthier cities, and a safer environment for future generations.
