Ghana pulls out as host of 2026 African Swimming Championships

Ghana has officially withdrawn from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships, a major continental event that was scheduled to take place in Accra from May 5 to 10, 2026.

The decision was announced by the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), which cited governance challenges and a lack of institutional support as the primary reasons for the withdrawal.

In a statement, the GSA explained that the expectations to host the championships—secured during a meeting in Cairo—could no longer be met due to internal disputes and external pressures. The association noted that ongoing electoral disagreements within the federation had significantly affected preparations for the competition.

Additionally, the GSA accused the National Sports Authority of attempting to impose guidelines that conflict with the association’s constitution, further complicating the organization of the event.

The withdrawal marks a setback for Ghana’s ambitions to host major aquatic competitions, with the future of the championships now uncertain.
