Ghana orders four Airbus helicopters to boost defence and air transport capacity

Ghana has placed its first-ever order for multi-mission Airbus helicopters, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s defence, security and air transport capabilities.

Airbus Helicopters announced on Friday, January 15, 2026, that it had signed a contract with Ghana’s Ministry of Defence for the supply of four helicopters—two H175Ms, one ACH175 and one ACH160.

The acquisition aligns with plans outlined in the 2026 Budget presented to Parliament on November 13, 2025. At the time, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson indicated that government would begin procurement processes in 2026 for four modern helicopters, as well as one long-range and one medium-range aircraft, to enhance the operational efficiency of the Ghana Air Force.

Under the agreement, Airbus said the two H175Ms will be deployed as multi-mission helicopters to support transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services and disaster relief. The ACH175 and ACH160 will be used mainly for transport duties.

“The commitment from Ghana marks the return of Airbus Helicopters to the country with a defined focus on customer support and partnership,” said Arnaud Montalvo, Head of Africa and the Middle East Region for Airbus Helicopters.

He expressed particular excitement about the introduction of the H175M into Ghana’s fleet, describing it as a highly versatile aircraft suited for defence and security missions. He added that the deal positions Ghana as a leading customer in West Africa for Airbus’ premium corporate helicopters, the ACH160 and ACH175.

The H175, which has been in service since 2014, is part of Airbus’ super-medium helicopter class and combines long-range capability with high payload capacity and smooth flight performance. It is designed for a wide range of missions, including disaster relief, search and rescue, public services, military operations and private or business aviation.

The ACH160, the latest member of Airbus’ ACH family, is described as the world’s most technologically advanced helicopter, incorporating 68 new patented Airbus technologies. It offers about 20 percent more cabin space per passenger than previous-generation medium twin helicopters and features windows that are 35 percent larger than competing models, delivering what Airbus describes as the brightest cabin in its class.

The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s emergency response, defence operations and executive transport capabilities while reinforcing its position as a key Airbus customer in West Africa.
