Ghana hosts Kimberly Process delegation to strengthen diamond governance

A high-level delegation from the Kimberley Process (KP) has arrived in Ghana for a comprehensive review of the country’s diamond certification framework, as the West African nation reaffirms its dedication to ethical practices in the global diamond trade.

Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), officially welcomed the delegation on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra. The four-day review visit, scheduled from March 9 to March 12, is being led by the Russian Federation and aims to assess Ghana’s adherence to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).

In his address, Mr. Gyamfi described Ghana’s role as host as a significant honour, emphasizing that the visit underscores the collective commitment of the international community to transparency and accountability. “Your presence here reflects the continued commitment of the Kimberley Process community to transparency, accountability, and the responsible governance of the international diamond trade,” he stated.

Mr. Gyamfi assured the delegation that Ghana remains unwavering in its commitment to the KPCS’s core principles. He framed the nation’s participation not merely as an obligation, but as a strategic endeavor to ensure that its diamonds meet rigorous international standards while contributing to national development and the well-being of its citizens.

The CEO highlighted that the successful implementation of the KPCS in Ghana is built on a foundation of robust inter-agency collaboration. Key partners in this framework include the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and various law enforcement agencies working in concert with stakeholders across the diamond value chain.

Beyond current operations, Mr. Gyamfi outlined a series of ongoing reforms designed to further fortify the sector. These initiatives include:

· Enhanced inspection and verification mechanisms.
· Strengthened internal control systems.
· Improved data management processes.
· Sustained capacity-building programs for technical and field personnel.

“Our continued oversight efforts in key producing areas, including Akwatia and surrounding communities, reflect our commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to evolving global expectations,” he added.

Mr. Gyamfi characterized the review visit as more than a routine procedural check. He positioned it as a vital opportunity for constructive dialogue, peer learning, and institutional strengthening that will benefit all participating nations.

Concluding his remarks, the GoldBod CEO expressed confidence in the review team’s expertise, stating that their forthcoming observations and recommendations would be instrumental in helping Ghana enhance its implementation of the Kimberley Process requirements.
