The Ghanaian government has issued a strong condemnation after two of its citizens were injured in a drone strike near Dubai International Airport on Wednesday, an attack that has heightened fears of a widening conflict in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that the two nationals sustained injuries in the early morning incident but noted that they are not in critical condition.
“Their injuries are not critical and we expect full recovery soon,” the ministry stated, adding that officials from Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have visited the victims, who are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Dubai.
The government denounced the attack, emphasizing the dangers posed to non-combatants and vital infrastructure. “The Government of Ghana strongly condemns any act that endangers civilian lives and critical infrastructure,” the statement read. “Such incidents pose serious risks to public safety and underscore the importance of ensuring the protection of civilians and vital international transport hubs.”
While authorities have not officially attributed the attack, the incident occurs against a backdrop of soaring regional tensions. The strike near one of the world’s busiest airports follows a series of escalations since a joint military operation by the United States and Israel began in Iran on February 28.
In the weeks since, multiple nations hosting US military assets have reportedly faced retaliatory actions attributed to Iranian forces. The drone incident near Dubai is among several recent attacks on civilian infrastructure, with human rights monitors reporting strikes on homes, hotels, and schools across the region.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 1,262 civilians, including more than 200 children.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ghana is actively participating in UN consultations seeking a resolution to end hostilities. The government has also urged Ghanaian nationals in the Gulf region to remain vigilant and adhere to guidance from local authorities and the Ghanaian embassy.
