Ghana begins emergency evacuation of citizens from Qatar amid rising Middle East tensions

The Ghanaian government has initiated an emergency evacuation for its citizens in Qatar, responding to escalating security concerns across the Middle East, the Embassy in Doha has announced.

In an urgent notice issued on Sunday, March 15, 2026, the mission directed all Ghanaian nationals in Qatar who wish to return home to submit their passport biodata pages via email immediately. The registration comes with a strict deadline of Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Officials have stressed that the operation is a one-way evacuation from Qatar to Ghana. The notice, marked with triple “FLASH” warnings, underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for swift action.

This move escalates a previous advisory released by the embassy on March 6, which first alerted the community to the deteriorating security landscape in the region. With conditions potentially worsening, authorities are moving to secure the safe return of citizens while travel routes remain open.

“We refer to its earlier notice dated 6th March, 2026 and to inform all Ghanaians living in Qatar that the Government of the Republic of Ghana has decided to undertake an emergency evacuation exercise in Qatar in the wake of the heightened security situation in the Region,” the statement read.

The development follows weeks of fluctuating tensions in the Middle East, particularly amid ongoing hostilities involving Israel and Iran, which have prompted several nations to activate contingency plans for their nationals abroad.

The evacuation presents significant logistical challenges, given the number of Ghanaians residing and working in Qatar. Many have moved to the Gulf nation in recent years seeking employment, particularly in the infrastructure and services sectors.

The Ghanaian mission in Doha has not yet detailed the scale of the operation or the timeline for evacuation flights. However, the tight registration window suggests authorities are quickly compiling a passenger list to facilitate coordination with aviation and immigration officials.

Ghanaians in need of assistance have been encouraged to stay in contact with the embassy and monitor official channels for further updates. Evacuees must send their passport biodata pages to doha@mfa.gov.gh without delay.
