Ghana appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach for 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has named veteran tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, tasking him with leading the side at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment, announced by the GFA’s Executive Council following consultations with key stakeholders, sees the former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran manager take charge of Ghana’s campaign in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Queiroz brings a distinguished World Cup résumé to the role. He previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 edition, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. His extensive coaching experience also includes stints with Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.

The Portuguese coach is expected to begin work immediately as he prepares the Black Stars for the global showpiece, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.

Ghana will play its opening Group match against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada, before facing England and Croatia in subsequent group-stage fixtures.
