The Ghanaian government has bolstered the country’s aviation and defence capabilities with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art multi-mission Airbus helicopter, officials have confirmed.
The newly acquired aircraft, part of the H175M series, is expected to significantly enhance the operational readiness of the Ghana Air Force and other state institutions in both security and humanitarian missions.
The helicopter forms part of a broader procurement initiative by the Ministry of Defence, which secured multiple aircraft from Airbus Helicopters. The H175M is a modern, versatile platform designed to handle a wide spectrum of military and civilian operations, including troop transportation, search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster response, and surveillance.
Aviation experts highlight the aircraft’s spacious cabin and robust payload capacity as key advantages, enabling efficient transport of personnel and essential equipment—particularly critical during natural disasters and emergency relief efforts in remote areas.
The helicopter is also equipped with advanced navigation and safety systems, allowing it to operate effectively in challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain. This capability is expected to improve response times during critical operations and ensure safer transport for personnel and cargo.
In addition to the multi-mission helicopter, Ghana’s order includes other Airbus models intended for government transport and VIP official functions.
The acquisition underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to modernising national defence and aviation infrastructure. For the Ghana Air Force, the new asset will complement existing aircraft, improving mobility, surveillance capacity, and operational efficiency across the country.
Beyond defence applications, the helicopter holds potential for civilian support, including medical evacuations and disaster relief in regions with limited road access.
The move reflects a broader trend among African nations investing in modern aviation technology to strengthen security and emergency response capabilities. With this addition, Ghana continues to advance its adoption of cutting-edge aviation solutions for both military and public service needs.
