The French government has rejected media reports claiming that South Africa was disinvited from the upcoming G7 Summit, clarifying that no formal invitation was ever withdrawn and dismissing suggestions of external pressure influencing the guest list.
French officials moved to correct what they described as a misleading narrative following speculation that South Africa had been removed from the list of invited nations due to diplomatic tensions and alleged pressure from other global actors, including the United States.
According to official sources, the selection of guest countries for the G7 Summit is not subject to unilateral decisions or last-minute exclusions. The process is coordinated collectively among all member states, with invitations determined by consensus based on shared strategic interests and global priorities.
Officials emphasized that no single country holds the authority to unilaterally impose or reverse decisions regarding participation. Invitations to non-member countries, they explained, are carefully discussed and agreed upon by all G7 members to ensure balance, fairness, and diplomatic cooperation.
The French government further stated that South Africa was never formally invited and subsequently uninvited, stressing that such a portrayal misrepresents the established engagement process. Guest participation, officials noted, is typically finalized through consensus and strategic considerations rather than abrupt withdrawals.
South Africa has been included in previous G7 outreach sessions, reflecting its role as one of Africa’s largest economies and a key voice in global South discussions. However, France noted that guest invitations vary from summit to summit, depending on the host country and the collective priorities of G7 members.
The statement also aimed to dispel any suggestion of diplomatic friction between France and South Africa, reiterating that there is no tension between the two nations over the matter. French officials described the reports of a “disinvitation” as inaccurate and not reflective of official diplomatic decisions.
The G7 Summit serves as a key platform for engagement between leading industrialized economies and selected partner nations, with discussions typically focused on economic stability, security challenges, climate change, and international cooperation.
France reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong and constructive relations with South Africa and other African nations through ongoing multilateral cooperation and dialogue.
