The Ghana Police Service has apprehended four individuals believed to be responsible for a string of armed robberies in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region, following an intelligence-led operation aimed at curbing rising insecurity in the area.
Authorities report that the suspects are linked to two separate robbery incidents that occurred within a short span, targeting victims along district routes and heightening fears among local residents.
Three of the accused—Iddrisu Sidibey, Abdulai Bandey, and Suleman Issah Zibrim—are alleged to have attacked Thomas Dormatey, a teacher, on February 28, 2026. The assault reportedly took place between the Gadi and Chogsia communities, during which the victim was shot in the leg and robbed of his mobile phone and GH¢2,600.
In a related incident on March 8, 2026, the same group is accused of attacking Issah Ibrahim around 7:30 p.m. as he returned from Jagluu. He was reportedly robbed of his mobile phone and GH¢2,750 under similar circumstances.
According to police investigations, the suspects concealed themselves in nearby bushes before ambushing unsuspecting victims. They are believed to have used weapons to intimidate and subdue those they targeted.
The arrests were carried out in Chogsia following a coordinated police operation. Authorities confirmed that victims positively identified the suspects after their apprehension. A subsequent search led to the recovery of items believed to be connected to the crimes, including mobile phones and weapons.
A fourth suspect, Abdul Rahman Abdulai, was later arrested in connection with supplying the firearm used in the attacks. Police recovered the weapon, which had been hidden in a bush.
Authorities noted that two additional suspects, identified only as Adil and Sambo, remain at large. Efforts to locate and apprehend them are ongoing.
The four suspects have been arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court and remanded in custody. They are scheduled to reappear as legal proceedings continue.
The Upper West Regional Police Command has reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged the public to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity to security agencies.
The arrests mark a significant development in efforts to address robbery incidents in the district and restore a sense of safety for residents who have faced growing anxiety following the recent attacks.
