Former Prince Andrew arrested in unprecedented misconduct probe over Epstein links

In a historic development for the British monarchy, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of King Charles III, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office – marking the first time a senior royal has been detained in a criminal investigation in modern British history .

The 66-year-old former prince was taken into custody on Thursday morning at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk by Thames Valley Police, on what was also his birthday . Officers simultaneously conducted searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk as part of the ongoing investigation .

Allegations Stem from Epstein Documents

The arrest follows newly released documents from the US Justice Department’s investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which raised fresh questions about Andrew’s conduct during his decade-long tenure as the UK’s special representative for trade and investment from 2001 to 2011 .

According to emails reviewed by multiple media outlets, Andrew allegedly shared sensitive information with Epstein, including details about the restructuring of Royal Bank of Scotland following its £45 billion government bailout . In one July 2010 email, Andrew commented critically on the bank’s then-CEO Stephen Hester, suggesting “any number of balls being dropped in the management of RBS” .

Other correspondence indicates Andrew relayed information about Aston Martin, referencing “conflicts between internal parties” and “issues with the management and their relationship with their owner and the State of Kuwait” . Investigators are reportedly focusing on whether this constituted a breach of official confidentiality and whether there was any quid pro quo involved .

Police Confirmation and Legal Process

Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying: “We have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office” . The force added that the suspect “remains in police custody at this time” .

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright emphasised the significance of the investigation: “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office. We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time” .

Under UK law, Andrew can be held for up to 24 hours without charge, after which police must apply to the courts for any extension . Misconduct in public office carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment .

King Charles Issues Unprecedented Statement

Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles III, who did not receive advance warning of the arrest, issued a written statement expressing his “deepest concern” about the claims while affirming that “the law must take its course” .

“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities,” the King said . “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.”

The monarch added: “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all” .

‘Seismic’ Moment for Monarchy

Royal commentators have described the arrest as an unprecedented crisis for the House of Windsor. Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt told the Press Association: “The arrest of the eighth in line to the British throne is seismic. Senior royals are now in uncharted waters that they are ill-equipped to navigate” .

The arrest follows Andrew’s gradual fall from grace over his associations with Epstein. He was stripped of his royal titles and military affiliations by the King last year, though he technically remains eighth in the line of succession . In 2022, he settled a US civil lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was trafficked to have sex with Andrew when she was a teenager – claims he has consistently denied .

Wider Investigations Underway

The development has triggered broader scrutiny, with at least nine separate UK police forces confirming they are assessing reports linked to the Epstein files . Surrey Police has also appealed for information regarding allegations of “human trafficking and sexual assaults on a minor” in the county during the mid-1990s .

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has urged police to examine dozens of flights connected to Epstein that arrived at UK airports, suggesting that previous investigations “did not properly check vital evidence” .

Public reaction to the arrest has been notable, with many welcoming the development. London lawyer Emma Carter told AFP: “I’m pleased. It’s a strong message. He deserves that. He’s been hiding behind his privileges for too many years” .

The investigation continues, with authorities emphasising that Mountbatten-Windsor, like all individuals under UK law, is presumed innocent until proven guilty . Further updates are expected as the judicial process unfolds.
