Flick provides calm explanation after Yamal’s frustration mars Barcelona’s comeback win

Hansi Flick moved quickly to downplay concerns over Lamine Yamal’s visible frustration following Barcelona’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Atlético Madrid on Saturday, insisting the teenager’s reaction was simply a case of raw emotion rather than any internal discord.

The La Liga clash at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys appeared to be slipping from Barcelona’s grasp when Giuliano Simeone Baldini put Atlético ahead in the 39th minute. But Marcus Rashford restored parity just before the break, finding the net in the 42nd minute to send the teams into halftime level.

A first-half red card for an Atlético player shifted the balance decisively in Barcelona’s favor after the restart, and Robert Lewandowski completed the turnaround with an 87th-minute winner to seal all three points for the Catalan side.

Yet despite the victory, attention turned after the final whistle to Yamal. The young forward was seen walking past his coach without engaging, his frustration evident to everyone in the stadium.

Addressing reporters in his post-match press conference, Flick offered a straightforward explanation.

“Lamine gave everything he had during the match,” the Barcelona head coach said. “He was disappointed not to score or to make a decisive contribution in the final third. That frustration comes from emotion, nothing more.”

Flick emphasized that such reactions are entirely normal for competitive players who hold themselves to the highest standards. He confirmed that the matter had already been resolved inside the dressing room and insisted there was no lingering issue.

“There is no problem internally,” Flick added. “This is just part of the natural emotional intensity of football at the highest level.”

The victory strengthens Barcelona’s position in the La Liga title race, while Yamal — widely regarded as one of the club’s most promising young talents — remains a crucial figure in the team’s attacking dynamics despite his disappointment on the night.
